An ex-policeman who changed career to become a Chartered Financial Planner has revealed how he made the switch before going on to set up an increasingly popular cashflow planning tool.

Ray Adams, director at Niche IFA in Wales and CashCalc, began his career in the financial services industry in 1996 before setting up his own practice, in 2005.

After he achieved Chartered status in 2010, Mr Adams and his team decided to build their very own cashflow modelling tool and in May 2014 CashCalc was launched.

Mr Adams, who splits his time between providing financial advice and developing CashCalc, began his work life in the police.

The Chartered Financial Planner explained more in a feature with Financial Planning Today magazine.

Mr Adams was a sergeant for the bulk of his time with the force, but did reach Inspector on an acting level.

He said: “Before working in the financial services industry I was with the police force, and believe it or not the fundamental skills to become an adviser are not dissimilar.

“With the police I spent the majority of the time asking questions and finding facts.

“As a financial adviser I spend the majority of my time talking to clients and conducting fact finds. So when I made the switch it felt like a natural progression.”

His cashflow planning tool CashCalc has over 4,500 registered account holders and Mr Adams said: “We see no limit to our expansion.”

He said: “The aim is to help simplify the process of Financial Planning for the adviser whilst still producing the same high quality outputs that clients can understand.

“CashCalc has never been about the money; it’s about making a positive impact and giving advisers the tools they need.”
