Paraplanning kitemark gaining pace as fourth group joins
A fourth group of Paraplanners has thrown support behind efforts to develop a professional Paraplanning standard as the movement gained further momentum this week.
Scottish-based Paraplanners will hold their own gathering to debate how to go about creating a new benchmark and what form it should take.
This becomes the latest in a series of events to bring professionals together to tackle a long standing problem, much lamented in the sector, that anyone could in theory label themselves a Paraplanner.
Three interactive workshops called Howwows had already been set up as part of the process but there was demand for another one for those working in Scotland.
Paraplanners James Macaulay, Claire Scott and Keith Boyes have teamed up to run the Howwow at Brewin Dolphin's Edinburgh offices.
It will take place from 5-7pm on 10 March.
Despite the creation of IFP and PFS qualifications, attempts to better define the role of a Paraplanner have been hard to achieve.
Richard Allum CFPTM, Chartered MCSI, an organiser of the Howwows, a spin off from the Paraplanners Powwow, which he founded, hopes these will enable Paraplanners to form their own roadmap towards a kitemark.
Mr Allum said: “The response has been phenomenal since we announced the details of the events last week and I’m really looking forward to seeing what Paraplanners think of this.
“What do they think is a good way or a bad way of doing it? Do we need to speak to third parties or employers?
“We’ve had 111 sign up so far to attend an event and we’ve also had a lot of interest from the non-Paraplanning world.”
He praised the Scottish Paraplanning trio for showing initiative by putting themselves forward to set up their own Howwow.
Mr Allum said although logistics were limited and many Paraplanners were based in the south of the country, the Powwow movement wanted to try avoid being southern focused and he was delighted a Scottish event would be taking place.
The details of the three other events are as follows:
• 4 March 2016 Picturehouse Central, London
• 10 March 2016 The Chambers, Leeds
• 16 March 2016 the Howwow online
Mr Allum previously told Financial Planning Today: “There are technical exams that anyone can take and non-Paraplanners often take them as well. It demonstrates you can do an exam on tax or whatever but not that you can be a Paraplanner.
"There’s lots of training stuff out there but it tends to be focused on the technical side of things. There’s nothing out there as a benchmark. There’s nothing really to tell them how to do the job day to day.”
