The Personal Finance Society’s pro bono financial guidance campaign to help 6m serving and veteran Armed Forces members has received official recognition.

The PFS Forces MoneyPlan has received affiliate membership of the Confederation of Forces Charities (Cobseo).

Cobseo represents serving armed forces members and veterans – an estimated 6m people and their dependants.

Forces MoneyPlan is an initiative offering free financial guidance to Armed Forces personnel and veterans from qualified Financial Planners and advisers who are members of the Personal Finance Society.

The aim is to give armed forces members access to financial guidance they may otherwise not be able to afford.

The Personal Finance Society set up Forces MoneyPlan in 2017. It offers free generic financial guidance to Armed Forces personnel and veterans, usually a free, confidential one-off consultation (by phone, face to face or online) with a fully qualified and regulated financial adviser who is a member of the Personal Finance Society.

Cobseo membership is only open to charities or other organisations whose primary purpose is to “promote and further the welfare and general interests” of the Armed Forces community.

Keith Richards, chief executive of the Personal Finance Society, said: “Acceptance of the Personal Finance Society as an affiliate member is recognition of the unique role of Forces MoneyPlan and especially the efforts and commitment of our adviser volunteers, without whom this unique and valuable service would not be possible.

“In 2020, the PFS looks forward to working with Cobseo to broaden both the scope and impact of Forces MoneyPlan, by helping facilitate direct access to individual member charities that include, among many others, the Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes and armed forces charity SSAFA.”
