Sunak retains Jeremy Hunt as Chancellor
New Prime Minister Rishi Sunak MP has retained Jeremy Hunt MP as Chancellor in his first Cabinet.
Mr Hunt was appointed by former Prime Minister Liz Truss to replace former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng after his botched mini-Budget.
Mr Hunt’s appointment is among dozens of ministerial appointments made by Mr Sunak after he became Prime Minister yesterday when the two other contenders for the leadership of the Parliamentary Conservative Party, Penny Mordaunt and Boris Johnson, withdrew.
In terms of key financial services ministerial appointments and changes so far, Therese Coffey has moved from Work and Pensions Secretary to become Environment Secretary; Mel Stride becomes the new Work and Pensions Secretary and John Glen returns to the Treasury as Chief Secretary and will attend Cabinet.
Dominic Raab returns as Deputy Prime Minister and Grant Schapps has become Business Secretary. More junior ministerial appointments, such as Pensions Minister, are expected later.
