Intrinsic founder Sandy Leitch dies at 76
Sandy Leitch, founder of Intrinsic Financial Services which later became Quilter Financial Planning, has died aged 76.
Lord Leitch had more than five decades of experience in financial services, lastly serving as chairman of fintech FNZ Group from 2013 to 2024.
He founded Intrinsic in 2006 and when stepping down from the firm in 2017 he said: “Creating and building Intrinsic from a standing start 11 years ago has been one of the proudest achievements of my life.”
Steven Levin, Quilter CEO, said: “As a founder of Intrinsic in 2006, Sandy laid the foundation for what we now know as Quilter Financial Planning and served on the Quilter (then Old Mutual Wealth) board. His strategic insight and unwavering commitment to putting our customers at the heart of everything we do have been instrumental in shaping Quilter into the business it is today.”
Lord Leith also held many other senior roles including chair of Bupa, and chair and CEO of Zurich Financial Services UK, Ireland, South Africa and Asia Pacific.
He also served at Lloyds Banking Group as deputy chair, was chair of Scottish Widows, deputy chair of the Commonwealth Education Fund, and chair of the Association of British Insurers.
Lord Leitch began his career as a computer programmer, creating the first-ever UK life assurance search engine program in 1967. He became a Life Peer as Baron Leitch of Oakley, Fife in 2004. He took a leave of absence from the House in May 2024.
He became chairman of the FNZ group board in 2013 – 10 years after it was founded by former CEO Adrian Durham – and saw the company’s market value grow from £153m to £15.3bn. He was replaced by Gregor Stewart earlier this year.
Gregor Stewart, FNZ Group chair, said: “Sandy was not only a visionary leader but also a kind and generous soul who touched the lives of many. His contributions to FNZ, the wider industry, and his passion for improving society will forever be remembered. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”
Blythe Masters, FNZ Group CEO, said: “Sandy's reputation for kindness, vision, and deep commitment to FNZ was evident in everything he touched. He left an indelible mark on our organisation, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all for years to come. My thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.”
